Behind the Scenes with Oscar's Favorites

We’re excited to introduce a new kind of pet professional in our spotlight series: creators who don’t just work with animals, but build products inspired by them.

For this edition, we’re featuring Oscar’s Favorites, a healthy treat brand inspired by their dog, Oscar.

We first met at Coconut Pets birthday event, where we connected over our shared mission to improve pet wellbeing.

Later on, they joined us as partners at Nexus, generously providing samples of their freeze-dried snacks for our community.

Let’s get to know them better, together…

Meet Oscar’s Favorites

To start, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how Oscar’s Favorites came to life?

Hello, I’m Diego, Oscar’s dad. It all started when I read an article about the side effects of some kibble brands, and how their composition could affect a dog’s vitality and overall health. I started learning about different diets and began feeding Oscar raw food, and I noticed a drastic change in his coat and how happy he was.

I started buying frozen raw meals, but lazy me, I kept forgetting to thaw them on time. And when I did remember, I never had space in the freezer for my own food. So it became something I only managed from time to time.

Then, on a trip to the US, with Jack I discovered freeze-dried snacks, which I thought was really cool. I brought a few back for Oscar and he went mad about them. It was easy, the smell was good, and it didn’t cause any issues with his digestion. That’s when Jack told me, looks fun lets get a machine, and that's how everything started.

What made you decide to create a treat brand specifically for pets?

Oscar is the most important thing in my life, and I want him to have a healthy, long one. I believe that comes from feeding him what his nature actually demands. But I also understand modern life is complicated, and sometimes convenience is necessary.

That’s why I came up with a range of single-ingredient products: nutritious bites made from real, fresh meat, processed as little as possible, to keep it as close to nature as it can be.

What role did Oscar play in the development of the recipes or product idea?

Haha, great question. Oscar is a Pinscher with a Doberman’s appetite. He eats almost anything, but there are a few ingredients he doesn’t like that much, eggs being one of them. One day we decided to try eggs in the freeze-dryer just for our own curiosity, and he loved it. That’s actually how that product came to be.

What was the “moment” when you realised this could become a real brand and not just a home idea?

There were two moments that confirmed the idea. The first was seeing how dogs reacted to the snacks, especially when owners told us their dog was a picky eater, and they sent pictures of their dogs waiting for more. That gave us the first hint.

The second was when we asked a friend, who's a graphic designer, to help us fix our rough first b&w logo made in Canva. When she showed us the first draft, everything just started to make sense.

About the Products

Your treats are single-ingredient and freeze-dried. What inspired this direction?

Most dog food contains a lot of things you don’t even recognise, so you don’t really know what you’re feeding your dog. Having one ingredient at a time allows rotation and control on what and how you feed them.

And freeze-drying is the process that preserves most of the nutrients in each ingredient while extending shelf life, without needing any preservatives. It’s the closest you can get to raw.

How do you choose the ingredients you use?

Everything we use is sourced here in Luxembourg, which guarantees its freshness. Beyond that, each ingredient needs to play a real role in a dog’s daily diet, it has to make sense as part of the bigger picture, not just on its own. Liver is a good example: we include it because it’s vital for the full spectrum of vitamins it provides.

What makes freeze-drying a better option compared to traditional treats?

Freeze-drying is one of the gentlest drying processes that exists. It removes all the water content using very low temperatures, which preserves up to 95% of the nutrients. Because all the water is gone, there’s no environment for bacteria to grow, which makes the product shelf-stable without needing any preservatives. The flavour, smell, and texture that come out of the process are genuinely unique.

How do you ensure quality and safety in your production process?

We currently work with two of the best meat suppliers in the country: Abattoir Ettelbruck and La Provençale. Both meet the highest standards in the country’s food distribution chain. We process each ingredient in our atelier following our HACCP plan, and every ingredient has been previously tested in a professional laboratory to meet the requirements of the ALVA Vet& Food administration.

Pet Health & Nutrition

What do you think most pet owners misunderstand about “healthy treats”?

I wouldn’t call it misunderstanding so much as a lack of knowledge about what each dog actually needs nutritionally. Not many people have the time to read and understand what’s behind a label. Commercial dog food has done a great job of hiding the real ingredients behind each snack while still making the product feel accessible to the everyday consumer.

What are the most common mistakes you see pet owners make when choosing treats?

Two things stand out.

First, trusting the claims on the front of the packaging without ever checking the ingredient list.

Second, choosing quantity over quality.

What should people look at first when reading pet food labels?

Read the ingredient list first, before anything else on the packaging. Don’t fully trust the front of the bag.

Sometimes you’ll see images of meat and vegetables, but when you check the label, it’s full of unnecessary fillers that, in some cases, aren’t even good for dogs, things like flours, grains, oils, and added flavours are No-No. The shorter the ingredient list, the better.

What role do treats play in a dog’s overall wellbeing, in your view?

Snacks play a much bigger role in a dog’s wellbeing than people give them credit for. They could support a dog’s whole physiology when they are the right ones, and they’re a great tool for stimulating cognitive behaviour, plus enriching the daily diet with new textures, flavours, and variety. When you choose a good quality treat for training, dogs are more willing to cooperate.

Community & Collaboration

Do you remember how we met? It was at Coconut Pet’s 2nd birthday. Morgan and I noticed Oscar right away — he had such “main character” energy. Then you told us, “he has a brand,” and pointed to his face on the packaging. At first, I thought you were joking… until I recognised him. When you explained what you do and how you do it, I immediately fell in love with the brand. And let’s be honest — everyone fell in love with Oscar that day. Does he always have that effect on people?

That’s very sweet of you. I remember that day well, he was all over the place. I have to admit Oscar can be a bit much sometimes, he loves the attention of people even more than he loves other dogs. He’s such a character!

We’re also really grateful for your collaboration with us at Nexus. People loved the samples and were excited to bring them home to their dogs. It added a great dynamic to our booth. What made you agree to collaborate with us on this?

I was really happy when you told me you’d be participating at Nexus. I think your project is genuinely valuable and brings a lot of credibility and validation to the pet industry in Luxembourg and you and Morgan are very trustworthy.

The first thing that came to mind was picturing those tech/executives folks heading home after a full day at the event with a snack for their pet instead of the typical merchant pen you get in such events.

I’m sure those that grabbed one enjoy them back home.

How important is community feedback in shaping your brand?

Very important. In fact, it’s the main reason we keep working hard to maintain the quality, and therefore the reputation, of our product.

What kind of pet professionals or partners do you enjoy collaborating with most?

I enjoy collaborating with dog trainers most, because they’re the ones who teach us humans how to actually have a better relationship with our dogs.

Behind the Brand

What do you enjoy most about running Oscar’s Favorites?

I really like talking to people at events.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

Getting in touch with some local stores has proven to be more difficult than abroad.

What’s something people don’t see behind a small pet brand like yours?

How much work is behind in each of the product

What are you most proud of to date?

I’m proud of my dog Oscar and to be able to share this project with him.

Life With Pets

Tell us more about Oscar (how he arrived in your life, how you chose his name, what he is like, etc.)

haha this is a very interesting story. I was living in Madrid and we decided to visit a pet store and he was jumping like crazy… We were not totally sure of the decision and we almost left the store when my ex-partner said the crazy one has a nice colour and we decided to come back and took him.

Once home, our initial name was “Ramon”, but he never reacted to this name.. We were shouting different names for a couple of days and he never reacted until at one moment we mentioned Oscar, and he turned back and looked at us. There we understood he chose the name.

How would you describe Oscar in three words?

Lovable, curious and empathy

What’s the funniest or most “Oscar” thing he does?

He loves to eat pistachios with the shell. You have to see him peeling the shell off, is crazy. He doesn't like them already peeled.

What’s the most important lesson Oscar has taught you?

Unconditional love.

What’s your favorite pet-friendly place in Luxembourg?

A chinese restaurant in Gare “Hong Kong house” The owner always brings 3 prawns to him when we are having dinner there.
